Vegetable Producing Districts

Adequate Market For the Produce

  • Suitable markets for fruits and vegetables available within and around the state.
  • Potential to export as well.
  • To meet such a high demand horticulture activities need to be expanded on war footing.
  • Other than fruits and vegetables, also scope for -
    • Floriculture
    • Spices
    • Herbal and Medicinal plants
    • Aromatic plants
    • Jute, hemp, sisal
    • Tea cultivation, processing & packaging
    • Paper
    • Cattle feed
  • The active presence of the Horticulture and Agro Forestry Research Center (a division of ICAR) in Ranchi and their numerous research projects and techniques have resulted in..
    • Production of fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. of very high quality - well suited for exports.
    • Higher yield of all crops.
  • The state government is committed to provide full support for promotion of horticultural activities.
  • Numerous benefits to agencies engaged in horticulture and related activities are provided.

Horticulture Related Venture

  • Processing Industries
  • Export oriented fruit, vegetable and ornamental gardening
  • Cold storage
  • Micro propagation
  • Floriculture
  • Exotic vegetables
  • Bio fertilizer and Bio pesticides
  • Medicinal and Aromatic plants
  • Mushroom culture
  • Vegetable seed production
  • Nursery for fruit plants

Cold Storage

  • There is need to establish multi purpose, multi chamber cold storage in this region for the storage of surplus fruits and vegetables.
  • Setting up of Hi-tech cold storage will be highly profitable. This will regulate the market, and enable to provide produce during off-season and subsequently increase production.
  • Setting up of this facility would in turn be helpful in handling of horticultural produce for distant markets and also export of horticulture crops.

Micro Propagation

  • Commercial plant propagation through tissue culture to meet the growing demand is the need of the hour.
  • Setting up a micro propagation unit for propagation of cultivars of different horticultural crops to meet the demand is also essential.
  • Micro propagation linked with commercial cultivation of flowers for domestic and export market would bring quantum change in the present state of floriculture.
  • A large area of the state still remains unused or merely used for crop production, which can be brought under different horticultural crops for sustainable development of the state. Extensive plans by state government to augment area under cultivation.
  • At present only 1.05 lakh ha (4.5% of cultivable land) area is under different horticultural crops.
  • As per projections, about 80,000 ha area has to be brought under fruit production by the year 2010 which will require about 348.1 lakh fruit plants.
  • For expansion of area under horticulture, a large number of quality planting-material of different horticultural crops will be required.
  • Thus there is a need for establishment of large-scale disease free plant multiplication unit in the state.
  • Micro-propagation is one of the most efficient methods for rapid multiplication of plants.

Floriculture

  • Investment in Hi-tech floriculture for the export-oriented crops provides better opportunities for high profit.
  • These include roses, gerbera, orchids, lilies and gladiolus for export market.
  • Marigold, chrysanthemum, gladiolus, gerbera, tuberose, dahlia, golden rod etc. offer immense potential for internal market.
  • The type of cut flowers available under protected cultivation in the region is of world class.
  • Development of onward linkages with International market will open up a new era in commercial floriculture.

Exotic vegetables

  • The climate of the state is very conducive for the cultivation of exotic vegetables such as
  • Broccoli,
  • Red cabbage,
  • Baby corn,
  • Kale,
  • Swiss chard etc.

Which have growing market in the state as well as adjoining areas.

Bio fertilizer and Bio pesticides

  • In the present time of bio intensive agriculture, several production units of bio fertilizer and pesticides are required.
  • This is more particularly required in Jharkhand state as the land is always deficient in nutrients and low cost and renewable source of N, P, K and micronutrients can be obtained through these products.
  • Bio pesticides are required also for environmental safety.

Medicinal and Aromatic plants

  • The region has large forest cover which serves as reservoir for large number of medicinal and aromatic plants species.
  • 22 out of 26 medicinal & aromatic plants are found in the state.
  • Systematic collection, conservation and utilization of these plants to cure different diseases will be helpful in establishing industries based on these plants in this region.

Mushroom culture

  • The Jharkhand state has a mild climate, which is well suited to cultivate different types of mushrooms.
  • The raw material like paddy straw is abundantly available in the region, which can be utilized for rearing mushrooms whereas its waste can be used for production of vermi-compost.
